About Us: Relationships
The IAMS Company
The Iams Company, headquartered in Dayton, Ohio, is dedicated to researching and developing the best food possible to enhance the well-being of dogs and cats around the world. The company was founded in 1946 when Paul Iams, dissatisfied with existing pet foods on the market, developed a complete, balanced diet for dogs. Continuous research led to the development of new and improved product lines, and today there are more than fifty dog- and cat-food products that carry the Iams name, including prescription diets. Puppies Behind Bars decided to feed its puppies Iams' "Eukanuba" line of dog food, given its superior nutritional value and reputation, and was deeply grateful when the company agreed to donate the product. All our puppies currently eat (inhaling is probably a more apt description) Eukanuba Puppy Food for Large Breeds and advance to Eukanuba Adult Maintenance as they get older. Read the IAMS study. With a long history of supporting community service programs that improve the quality of life for people and pets, the Iams Company eagerly espoused the concepts behind Puppies Behind Bars. As Connie McKamey, Manager of Corporate Contributions for Iams, puts it, "Whether as pets or as working companions for the visually or physically impaired, we understand the wonder that is love between people and their dogs and cats. We are proud to provide the best nutrition to help grow healthy, happy dogs who will spend years at the side of their blind companions. This is truly a rewarding program for everyone involved."
Building “Beary” Strong Support
Since 2005, Build-A-Bear Workshop and its corporate foundations have contributed over $25,000 to support Puppies Behind Bars. The company’s support has helped PBB in a variety of ways including sponsoring the puppy “Bear” who entered Fishkill Correctional Facility in December 2005 and who is currently in formal training as a guide dog. Additionally, Build-A-Bear Workshop has funded countless trips to the vet for scores of our pups and in 2006 honored longtime volunteer Matt Krauze as a Huggable Hero, a program that recognizes the efforts and accomplishments of young volunteers. Build-A-Bear Workshop has a number of grant initiatives which they coin “Grants for Pawsome Causes” but PBB specifically benefits from their Bearemy Kennel Pals®. One dollar from the sale of each full-sized Bearemy's Kennel Pals® friend funds the special quarterly grantmaking program. Since 2004 the company has distributed more than two million dollars in grants to various non-profits and boy, aren’t we “beary” proud and honored to be part of that!
We’re Glad to Be on Their Planet
In the last two years, the Planet Dog Foundation has donated $7,500 in support of “Paws & Reflect”, PBB’s program in conjunction with the New York City Department for the Aging (DFTA) and the Jewish Association for Services for the Aged (JASA) that pairs visits to Manhattan’s homebound elderly with our puppies’ weekend socialization furloughs. Paws & Reflect has proven essential to our dogs’ success as it enables them to learn how to work with elderly and frail populations. Representatives from Planet Dog made visits to the Mid-Orange Correctional Facility and PBB’s Manhattan offices and you will notice that many of our pups still sport fashionable and durable Planet Dog collars and leashes, thanks to the generosity of the Foundation staff. Our pups lucked out in the Planet Dog toy department too! “Sniff Planet Dog out” at www.planetdog.com
